In 2007, large F5 tornado destroyed the small town of Greensburg, Kansas, destroying 95% of the city. What is not stable and suffered heavy damage and one half miles larger tornado left the town completely destroyed.
In the midst of disaster, the city chose to rebuild rather surprisingly green and drafting a resolution that all new buildings will be built to LEED Platinum, making them very likely a green city in the country. May 4 marked the third anniversary of the deadly disaster and is celebrated by opening a new eco homes Silo, which is not only environmentally friendly and energy efficient, are also capable of withstanding winds 200 km / h, which proved to be almost a tornado.

After the tornado, the community came together and reconstruction plan that includes a commitment to build a LEED Platinum standards and become a model green city for the future.
Perhaps only fate that the name Greensburg city, and maybe people feel like they need to live with that name, but since 2007, the community has been doing a very good revival of their city a better, stronger and more green. Greensburg Greentown, a nonprofit started by Daniel Wallach and is committed to help grow a green city, is the focus of transformation – to provide resources, technical assistance, education programs, and contribute to control of city plans.
The city has a long list of accomplishments and new buildings since 2007 and most cities would envy, including design competitions, tours of green to highlight the city, the Green School Club, the market producers, the timber reclamation projects, volunteer programs and educational series.
Agriculture 10 Greensburg wind turbine energy production begins in March and supply enough power for 4000 households, which is more than enough power for the entire city. Carbon neutral city also works at the Eco House chain of two dozen houses around the city devoted to the presentation of green building technologies and services as a living laboratory. Once completed the chain of Eco Homes will be available, either as a hub and eco-lodge where you can experience first-hand live green. If not, more than 100 houses have been rebuilt with energy estimates made on the account amounting to 40% above code.
When the tornado crossed a small town in southwestern Kansas, almost everything has been destroyed – except the grain elevator, a testament to the natural construction and design allows the wind to move rather than increasing the pressure on one side. Inspired by the silo strength, Eco Home silo, the first eco-house chain, has been designed with a cylindrical silo on the bottom. The house is constructed of six inch thick reinforced concrete walls and can withstand 200 + mph winds, as a city Greensburg know when the tornado came through the fateful night. Love the house, who built Silo Eco Home, went so far as to file a car onto the roof of the house to ensure that can withstand the power of F5 average.
But Silo Eco house is not super strong, he’s also very energy and water. Building houses two floors of the headquarters of a nonprofit organization to help green the city of Greensburg Greentown, and has offices and breakfast, which can be rented for those wishing to explore the green life first hand. Green Home covers a variety of sustainable features, such as permeable driveway, solar systems, green roofs, insulation and glass super-efficient, passive solar design, eco-friendly finish, lighting, LED pictures low VOC sealants, energy control, water efficient fixtures, bioswale a, native landscape, compost, and more.
It’s really amazing what a small town of Greensburg has been conducted over the last three years. In fact, we might all learn a lot from their dedication, awareness and education.
